There are some 300,000 children serving as soldiers in current armed conflicts in more than 30 countries around the world. They participate in all aspects of contemporary warfare, wielding AK-47s and M-16s, serving as human mine detectors, carrying supplies, and acting as spies. An optional protocol to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child forbids the involvement of children under the age of 18 in armed conflict. But some governments have refused to sign it, and it is widely ignored. Tonight's talk is lead by human rights campaigner Bianca Jagger; Jo Becker, Children's Rights Advocacy Director at Human Rights Watch; and former child soldier China Keitetsi, now resettled in Denmark and author of My Life as a Childsoldier in Uganda. Chair: Sue Lloyd-Roberts.
