Across the Multiverse

Looking into space using increasingly sensitive technology, it seems that the universe stretches nearly thirty billion light years across. So far as we can tell, there is no visible boundary to space time. But could our model of the universe as infinite be as flawed as the old view that the world is flat? Perhaps, as Einstein suggested, space-time is curved, connected and compacted. Tonight's speaker, Janna Levin, will ask whether by searching for the shape and extent of space we will eventually be able to locate ourselves in this vast cosmos. The Café Scientifique is a place where layperson and expert alike can come to explore the latest issues in science and technology over a glass of wine or a cup of coffee. No scientific knowledge will be assumed by the speakers so that everyone can participate in an informal and accessible atmosphere. Nash Room
