Eternal Youths
T0
One of the paradoxes of our ageing society is that many of us seem increasingly obsessed with the idea of youth. The global market for anti-ageing products has burgeoned in the last few years. At the same time, according to a survey published in January 2004, two-thirds of Britons would wish to change their looks with cosmetic surgery and one in ten have already done so. Is our increasing acceptance of the cosmetic surgeon s knife empowering - evidence of the extraordinary mutability of the body - or does it show evidence of something more damaging and more conservative? Speakers:Dr Angelika Taschen, editor of Aesthetic Surgery and author of Taschen titles; Dr Dai M Davies, aesthetic surgeon and principal, Institute of Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery; George Leeson, Institute of Ageing, University of Oxford; Anna Marie Solowij, Beauty and Health Director, Vogue. Chair: Paula Black, Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Sussex and author of The Beauty Industry: Gender, Culture, Pleasure.
