Fair Pay, Fair Play
T0
The Internet is a haven for hackers and pirates. In publishing, this pitches the users' desire for easy access (fair play) against the creators' call for rewarded labour (fair pay). Some see this as a battle between copyleft and copyright. But, there's no reason why the two interests should not exist side by side. This one-day seminar will look at fairness in the digital world (authenticity, plagiarism, knowledge-sharing) and how the current laws uphold it (rights management, encryption, education). What should replace our out-moded laws? Speakers include Peter Shepherd, Chief Executive of the Copywright Licensing Agency, on how licensing benefits authors, artists and publishers; John Buckman on the freedom of Creative Commons; Sandy Starr, from SPIKED, on civil liberty. Chaired by Jane Dorner, from the CLA.
