Helon Habila's first novel Waiting for an Angel told the story of a journalist living under military rule in the cut and thrust of 1980s Lagos Binyavanga Wainaina is from Kenya. Like Helon he won the Caine Prize for African Writing, in Binyavanga's case for his short story Discovering Home.
