On Hijab: Susie Orbach and Salma Yaqoob

T0
Discussions about the hijab between Western feminists and Muslim women who wear it tend to get stuck on simple oppositions: Is it oppressive or can it be liberating? Is it a spiritual choice or a cultural prescription? Does it imply a particular view of men's and women's sexuality? In an open-ended conversation on the shared ground of psychotherapy, Susie Orbach and Salma Yaqoob explore the meanings of hijab in terms of women's experiences of their bodies and their clothes, public and private identities, sexuality and spirituality, cultural and political affiliations. Susie Orbach is a psychotherapist and writer. Salma Yaqoob is a psychotherapist, chair of the Birmingham Stop the War Coalition and a founder of RESPECT. Chair: Maria Margaronis, London correspondent for The Nation.
