A debate organised jointly by Demos, The Economist and the ICA The anti-globalisation movement that made its name on the streets of Seattle, Prague and Genoa now faces a new reality. After September 11, the tone has shifted from confrontation to engagement. As the World Trade Organisation prepares to meet in Doha, Demos publishes a pamphlet, by John Lloyd, called The Protest Ethic which argues that it is vital for the global financial institutions to secure democratic legitimacy. The Economist, the ICA and Demos have assembled a diverse panel of experts who will grapple with the issues raised in Lloyd's pamphlet. This will be an agenda-setting debate ahead of the WTO summit. Speakers include: John Lloyd, author of The Protest Ethic, Clive Crook, Deputy Editor of The Economist, and the author of The Economist's recent survey on globalisation, a member of the Government's WTO delegation (tbc). Tom Bentley, Director of Demos will chair.
