Why, when we decide to move, does movement just happen? And how can we be sure it is our body which moves? Tonight's speakers explore the balance between doing and being. How can movement or sensory loss, throw light on our experience of embodiment and selfhood? Conversely, what insights can be had from prolonged attention to movement, when a dancer undergoes intensive training? What is the relation between intention, action and the body? Speakers: Roz Carroll, body psychotherapist; Ian Waterman, consultant in accessible environment management who lives without touch or movement sense below the neck; Patrick Haggard, neuroscientist, Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, UCL. Contributing chair: Jonathan Cole, consultant in clinical neurophysiology.
