Freud's words are everywhere - but what has been lost in the translation? The classic early translation has been 'returned to' and spun very thin by TV shrinks. Will the new translation of the Penguin Freud, out this month, stimulate new interest and captivate a new audience? What difference will it make to public debate and private practice? Can looking at the text anew tell us anything more about psychoanalysis? Tonight's speakers include: Rachel Bowlby, professor of English at York University, and author of Carried Away: The Invention of Modern Shopping; Malcolm Bowie, professor of English at Oxford, whose books include Proust Among the Stars; and professor John Forrester whose forthcoming book is The Freudian Century. In the chair: Adam Phillips, formerly principal child psychotherapist at Charing Cross Hospital, and author, whose other books include Houdini's Box.
