Some argue that they no longer exist, others that they are alive and well and living in China. With the decline of traditional working class institutions and at a time of political quiescence, is the idea of the working classes still a useful category? Do the working classes still exist, and, if so, how do they spend their time? An ICA series shines the spotlight back onto the workers. Widespread prejudice has it that America does not have a class system. Barbara Ehrenreich, the acclaimed American writer, campaigner and author of Nickle and Dimed and Bait and Switch, begs to disagree. In her talk at the ICA, Ehrenreich attempts to shed some light on the mysteries of America’s class structure, the morale of its elite and its working class. Following her talk, Ehrenreich will be interviewed by James Geary, Europe editor of Time magazine and author of We Are What We Think.
