Charles Vance
Fri, 25th Jan 13The flamboyant, generous, jack of all theatre, Charles Vance has died aged 83. Actor, theatre manager, adaptor, producer, director, critic and originatgor of Amateur Stage, Charles Vance was, perhaps, the last of the great all-rounders; a Victorian Impresario who still believed in Rep Theatre and put on a season each year.
We worked with Charles for many years on the Amateur Stage and CV Theatre websites and found him a pleasure to deal with. Years after those jobs moved on to others, and Amateur Stage was under new management, we'd still get the odd phone call just for a chat. Will the world of theatre change as a result of his death? No, I really don;t think so ... is it the end of an era? Yes, sadly I think it is. I shall miss his raw enthusiasm to keep theatre "old school" and the amateur theatre community owes him a debt of gratitude.
