Love Me Tender

A love story built around a range of the best Elvis songs
By Robert Iles - 16th Jun 2015

Review of Love Me Tender on tourTwenty five of Elvis's greatest songs woven around stories of love in a small town in mid-America. It doesn't necessarily speak to you of a fabulous night out - but you know what? It is. This is unpretentious fun presented massively tongue in cheek by a talented and enthusiastic cast - and it just works. More "We Will Rock You" than "Jersey Boys" and despite its total reliance on his songs there is no attempt here to tell you anything about Elvis, this is a fabricated story of a mid-West hick town under a (comedic) crushing regime of "no fun" being liberated by the arrival or a rock 'n;' roll roustabout. The songs move the plot forward, few are sung in anything like their original arrangement or at length but they provide the beat and much of the pleasure of the entire show.

Love Me Tender review. Photo by Johan PerssonWithout exception the cast can sing mightily and do so with gusto, its a shame that the sound system had some howl-around, but there you go, it didn't throw them and was only an occasional annoyance. The set is versatile, appropriate and fun giving plenty of space and height so we can see the action and with a good few jokes behind its design.

Dancing is enthusiastic (love the Klan member piece!) and dialogue is delivered with as much conviction as this sort of show allows.

Mica Paris has a very powerful voice and Shaun Williamson is a delight, not least because he always looks like he is just having so much fun! Laura Tebbutt has a wonderful voice and is a delight to watch on stage and Ben Lewis and Mark Anderson make a great comedy showing.

Put your critical side aside and go see the show, it really is a very, very pleasant way to spend an eveing!
