The Only Show in Town?
Thu, 19th Jul 12As news emerges that the Olympics opening ceremony is to be cut by 30 minutes (goodbye stunt bikes) it seems that there are good reasons not to come to town that evening.
During the Queen's Jubilee Concert, some people reported that the West End was quiet and you could walk into pretty well any show and get a seat - the same will not be true of the 27th July as most shows will simply not happen that night. The cancellations recognise the fact that most of the nation (including the casts of the shows) will be fixed on watching the ceremony on TV and not rushing to the West End.
The Opening Ceremony was shortened to ensure that the huge crowds could get back into London in time for the last trains home, another good reason not to be in London that night ;-)
For the brave (or foolhardy) there will be matinees of Chariopts of Fire and Spamalot and evening performances of The 39 Steps, The Complete World of Sports (abridged), The Hurly Burly Show, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Philadelphia, Here I Come and We will Rock You.
And so it begins ....
