The Phantom on tour
Wed, 30th May 12
The first thing we noticed about this production, before it even started, is how wonderful a chandelier looks hanging from the dome of Frank Matcham's beautifully designed Hippodrome in Bristol. Not that I'd want them to hang one there all the time as it would prevent them ever sliding the dome back to reveal the sky, but none the less, it looks so natural that, apart from the dust sheet, anyone new to the theatre would think it was an original feature. Oh and by the way, Happy 100th Birthday to the Hippodrome!
I saw Phantom in London a good few years ago, enjoyed it but was not overwhelmed. I have also seen shows in Bristol where the West End have sent a "touring version" and been underwhelmed ... so I was interested to see how the evening would pan out. Basically, I loved it! This is, without a doubt, the best West End to Touring Version adaptation I have seen and (unless crashing light fittings are your primary interest) you will not be disappointed ... this really is a beautiful production with amazing sets and a dedicated cast still giving it their all.
John Owen-Jones's brings a full emotional range to his Phantom and Katie Hall is a delightful Christine. Simon Bailey as Raoul is suitably sympathetic and the comedy timing of Angela M Caesar's Carlotta is a real delight. Voices are strong, pace is well maintained, sets are fab .... this really will save you a trip to London ;-) Go see ....
