Latvian organist Iveta Apkalna makes her Proms debut with a programme of French 19th- and 20th-century music. Leif Ove Andsnes and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra 2 - T0294373416

In his Third Piano Concerto Beethoven opened up a new dramatic and physical scope, pushing the instrument to new expressive lengths. The same maverick energy pulses through the 'Choral Fantasy', anticipating the Ninth Symphony in its unexpected resort to words in its finale. In Schoenberg's tour de force Friede auf Erden ('Peace on Earth') the composer takes tonality to its limits. Stravinsky's 'Dumbarton Oaks' Concerto is a delightful neo-Classical romp, an elegant homage to the 18th century. Finish time: approx. 21:35Company BBC Singers. Company Mahler Chamber Orchestra. Elgar, Walton, Moeran & David Horne - T033654633

Moeran's lyrical Violin Concerto meshes the composer's English heritage with his love of the Irish landscape. The English theme continues with Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations - his affectionate musical portraits of friends and family - and Walton's Hindemith Variations, another intensely personal homage and the first work in this year's focus on the music of William Walton. British music comes right up to date with the shifting soundscapes of David Horne's Daedalus in Flight. Finish time approx. 21:50Performer Tasmin Little (violin). Company BBC Philharmonic. Sir Antonio Pappano and the Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecilia, Rome, take a musical journey that begins with the ceremonial fizz and pomp of Mozart's ?Haffner' Symphony and ends in the burnished melancholy and high drama of Rachmaninov's Symphony No 2. Jan Lisiecki makes his Proms debut in Schumann's Piano Concerto, a work that eschews empty technical display and calls instead for a detailed and intimate dialogue between pianist and orchestra: chamber music on a grand scale. Daniel Barenboim and his youthful ensemble relish the energy of Beethoven's Fourth Symphony before tackling the 'Eroica', one of the irrefutable mould-breakers of classical music. Between these peaks, Boulez's Dialogue de l'ombre double introduces another kind of theatre, the clarinet's electronic double becoming more 'real' than the soloist physically present. BBC Philharmonic - T01827616589

Yan Pascal Tortelier returns to the Manchester-based BBC Philharmonic, of which he is Conductor Laureate, for a programme that includes the first public performance of Arnold Bax’s In memoriam, written in memory of Patrick Pearse, a leader of the failed Irish Easter Rising in 1916. The piece was only recently discovered to have been orchestrated and shows Bax at his most inventive. Vaughan Williams’s Fourth (which he dedicated to Bax) is one of his most powerful symphonies, showing a very different side to the composer from the serene, pastoral idiom with which he is often associated. And between these two British works, the first of Rachmaninov’s four piano concertos. At its heart lies a slow movement of great beauty - a poetic gift for the astoundingly talented Yevgeny Sudbin, making his Proms debut. Finish time approx. 21:25Performer Yevgeny Sudbin (piano). Conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier. Music Bax (15mins)). Music Rachmaninov (26mins)). Music Vaughan Williams (33mins)).
