Daniil Trifonov Plays Mason Bates - T01666375253

Cinematic drama stalks through a concert that opens with Bernard Herrmann's suite from his score for Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo and closes with Prokofiev's Third Symphony, a work heavy with bells, cymbals, sinister dances and flashes of bright musical moonlight. Meanwhile, piano superstar Daniil Trifonov is the soloist in the UK premiere of Grammy Award-winner Mason Bates's Piano Concerto. A musical journey through time, the work opens with Renaissance clarity of texture, moving through a richly Romantic slow movement to a sleek finale where jazz meets Minimalism. Spanish conductor Gustavo Gimeno leads the BBC Symphony Orchestra.Performer Daniil Trifonov (piano). Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Gustavo Gimeno.

Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring - T01144679399

Rites and rituals run through this concert given by Martyn Brabbins and the BBC SO. Scored for 109 musicians, centenary composer Xenakis' Jonchaies is a powerful hit of sound and sensation. Intricate mathematical patterns underpin a work of visceral sonic drama - a natural companion to the primal rhythms and hypnotic dances of Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring, which reportedly prompted a riot at its Paris premiere in 1913. BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Tom Borrow is the soloist in Ravel's Piano Concerto in G major - its light-hearted, glittering brilliance a foil to so much intensity.Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Martyn Brabbins.

Pekka Kuusisto - T0560079307

Violinist Pekka Kuusisto memorably set the entire Proms audience singing a Finnish folk song in 2016. Now he returns for a Prom joined by fellow Finnish folk musicians, which sprinkles rustic Finnish folk music among two pinnacles of Finnish orchestral sophistication: Sibelius's great Romantic Violin Concerto (with Kuusisto as soloist) and his Fifth Symphony - a work suffused with light and autumnal warmth. Thomas Dausgaard conducts the symphony's original, four-movement version, allowing a glimpse into the creative process of a work that Sibelius revised over a period of four years.Performer Pekka Kuusisto (violin). Performer Taito Hoffren (singer). Performer Ilona Korhonen (singer). Performer Minna-Lilsa Tammela (singer). Performer Vilma Timonen (kantele). Performer Timo Alakotila (harmonium). Schubert, Luke Bedford & Bruckner - T300385962

Although composed for the church, it is in the concert hall that the dramatic scale of Bruckner's mighty Mass in F minor comes into its own. A new commission from Luke Bedford puts the Royal Albert Hall's great organ in the spotlight, while opening the concert is Schubert's ?Tragic' Symphony ? a work whose heart-on-sleeve emotions are those of a composer still in his teens. Walton, Gurney & Sally Beamish - T0116836483

Commemorating 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War, the BBC Symphony Orchestra explores English responses to conflict across three generations. Gassed while fighting in the trenches in 1917, Gurney never fully recovered. His War Elegy (1920) is a characteristically personal lament - heavy with bittersweet sadness and regret. Sally Beamish's 1994 Violin Concerto, written for tonight's soloist, Anthony Marwood, takes inspiration from Erich Maria Remarque's novel All Quiet on the Western Front. While not explicitly programmatic, the slow movement of Walton's First Symphony is among the 20th century's most poignant orchestral cries of grief - an echo, perhaps, of horrors past, and a foreshadow of horrors yet to come. Finish time approx. 21:40Performer Anthony Marwood (violin). Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Martyn Brabbins.

Organ Recital - T0957534066

Picking up on the opening weekend's complete performance of The Mastersingers of Nuremberg and a number of other Wagner works during the season, charismatic organist Wayne Marshall turns a vividly coloured spotlight on the composer. The grandeur of the two opera overtures translates fittingly to the Royal Albert Hall's mighty instrument, while the airborne Valkyries may need to hold on to their horses even more tightly than usual during this particular flight. As one of the most fluent and ingenious of keyboard improvisers, Marshall turns his attention to Tristan and Isolde - forming an upbeat to tonight's performance of the opera's second act. Finish time: approx. 17:00Performer Wayne Marshall (organ).

Stravinsky/Schumann - T1694157813

We continue our Stravinsky ballet series with the zany Neapolitan comedy in which the composer's reworkings of rediscovered 18th-century scores (reputedly by Pergolesi) resulted in the creation of a whole new - and wholly modern - neo-Classical style. And we continue our bicentenary survey of Mendelssohn's symphonies with the one that quotes Luther's great Reformation hymn 'Ein' feste Burg ist unser Gott'. The young French-Canadian maestro Yannick Nézet-Séguin (Gergiev's successor at the Rotterdam Philharmonic and now Principal Guest Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra) makes his Proms debut, as does the prize-winning American pianist Nicholas Angelich in Schumann's popular concerto. Approx end time: 21:45Music Stravinsky (Pulcinella - 40 mins). Music Schumann (Piano Concerto in A minor - 30 mins). Music Mendelssohn (Symphony No 5 in D major 'Reformation - 28 mins).
