Budapest Festival Orchestra - T938765363

In the first of its three Proms this weekend, the Budapest Festival Orchestra and founder-conductor Iván Fischer are joined by celebrated fellow Hungarian Sir András Schiff for one of the great Romantic piano concertos - Schumann's generous, poetic bravura piece that renegotiates the relationship between soloist and orchestra. Weber's overture to Der Freischütz sees Romanticism take a supernatural turn when a huntsman makes a deal with the Devil. Darkness and light also meet in Mendelssohn's atmospheric ‘Scottish' Symphony, inspired by a twilight visit to the Palace of Holyrood, haunted by memories of Mary, Queen of Scots.Performer Andras Schiff (piano). Company Budapest Festival Orchestra. Conductor Ivan Fischer.

Haydn, Vaughan Williams, Kaija Saariaho and Beethoven - T1406618468

Celebrations of Vaughan Williams' 150th anniversary continue with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and Principal Conductor Dinis Sousa. They are joined by soloist Nicholas Daniel for the Oboe Concerto - a work that opens in elegiac, pastoral sweetness but also explores the instrument's piquant wit and athleticism. The music's echoes of medieval chant are shared by Kaija Saariaho's Vers toi qui es si loin - a mesmerising, other-worldly adaptation of music from the composer's troubadour opera L'amour de loin, with the original soprano line reassigned to a solo violin, played in her Proms debut by Polish violinist Maria Wloszczowska. This leads into Beethoven's Fourth Symphony, a joyful, energetic work often overshadowed by its two heavyweight symphonic neighbours.Performer Nicholas Daniel (oboe). Performer Maria Wloszczowska (violin). Company Royal Northern Sinfonia. Conductor Dinis Sousa.

L'Enfance Du Christ - T996756995

Sir Mark Elder and the Halle continue our series marking 150 years since the death of Hector Berlioz with the composer's vividly dramatic oratorio The Childhood of Christ. Simple and often disarmingly direct, with emotions that unfold in some of the composer's most beautiful melodies (including the much-loved 'Shepherds' Farewell'), the oratorio follows the Holy Family as they flee from Bethlehem into Egypt, where they find safety and welcome. A superb line-up of soloists is led by Dame Sarah Connolly.Company Britten Sinfonia Voices. Company Genesis Sixteen. Company Halle. Conductor Sir Mark Elder.

Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecilia & Sir Antonio Pappano - T1117940096

The Bernstein centenary celebrations continue in a programme that pairs his 'Jeremiah' Symphony with music by two composers he admired and championed. Appearing at the Proms for the first time in five years, Rome's Santa Cecilia Orchestra (of which Bernstein was Honorary President for almost a decade) and its Music Director Sir Antonio Pappano perform Bernstein's youthful First Symphony, charged with political anxiety and dread, alongside another symphonic debut, Mahler's dramatic First. The evening opens with Haydn's arresting musical vision of primordial chaos.Performer Elizabeth DeShong (mezzo-soprano). Company Orchestra of the Academy of Santa Cecilia Rome. Conductor Antonio Pappano (Sir).

BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Thomas Sondergard - T778625427

Thomas Sondergard conducts his BBC National Orchestra of Wales in a Prom exploring the idea of the orchestral 'passacaglia' and some of the most delicious and subtle orchestral sonorities ever conjured. Brahms's fourth and final symphony feels like the composer's supreme orchestral achievement; its finale, a radiant passacaglia, is the summation of the composer's quest to wed discipline and emotion. After Walton's boisterous Partita comes the world premiere of the latest Proms cello concerto, a piece written by Huw Watkins and played by his brother.Performer Paul Watkins (cello). Company BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Conductor Thomas Sondergard.

Steve Reich - T0871103642

The after-hours late-night atmosphere is a fitting backdrop to the pulsing rhythmic repetitions of Minimalism's founding father, Steve Reich. Relive the experimentation of It's Gonna Rain - the tape piece that first put Reich on the map back in 1965 - its hypnotic layers of spoken sound transforming a street preacher into a strange, disembodied instrument. The Desert Music twitches and throbs with life, offering a meditation on fragments of William Carlos Williams's poetry. The BBC Singers are joined by contemporary specialists the Endymion ensemble. There will be no interval. Finish time approx. 23:30Company BBC Singers. Conductor David Hill. Company Endymion (formerly Endymion Ensemble).

Urban Classic Prom - T0455421298

A dynamic meeting of musical cultures as conductor Jules Buckley brings together the BBC Symphony Orchestra with leading performers from the UK's vibrant urban music scene. In Urban Classic's experimental fusion of musical styles, high-octane orchestral showpieces by Mosolov and Henze rub shoulders with rap, R&B and soul. 'It's a culture clash,' says Jules Buckley. 'We're taking artists from different worlds and messing with their music, putting it in an orchestral context and exploring it in a new way.' There will be one intervalCompany BBC Symphony Orchestra. Elgar - The Apostles - T0408400642

Leading Elgar interpreter Sir Mark Elder directs a stellar cast and large-scale choral forces, reviving a major work of the British choral tradition. Elgar conceived The Apostles as a schoolboy, but the project came to fruition only in 1903 - after both The Dream of Gerontius and a visit to Bayreuth to hear Wagner's The Ring and Parsifal. Elgar explores the inner feelings of Judas Iscariot with dramatic intensity, and Christ's anguished cry from the cross becomes a wordless lament. There will be one interval. Finish time approx. 21:15Performer David Kempster (bass-baritone / St Peter). Performer Rebecca Evans (soprano / Blessed Virgin / Angel Gabriel). Performer Alice Coote (mezzo-soprano / Mary Magdalene). Performer Paul Groves (tenor / Narrator). Performer Jacques Imbrailo (baritone / Jesus). Performer Clive Bayley (bass / Judas). Bridge/Brahms/Holst & Elgar - T01662782800

The BBC Philharmonic's Chief Guest Conductor (who becomes Conductor Emeritus in September) continues his exploration of less-frequented corners of the repertoire, proceeding from an invigorating British concert-opener to an uncommon yet inescapably familiar concerto. Inspired by the fact that Bach and Beethoven arranged their own violin concertos for the keyboard, Dejan Lazic has done the same for the Brahms with engagingly idiomatic results. Julian Lloyd Webber is an ardent champion of Holst's Invocation. The concert ends with Elgar's affectionate sketches of 'friends pictured within' - a firm favourite that retains its own aura of mystery. Finish time: approx. 21:50Performer Dejan Lazic (piano). Performer Julian Lloyd-Webber (cello). Company BBC Philharmonic. Conductor Vassily Sinaisky.

BBC Philharmonic - T905387380

The BBC Philharmonic returns with Chief Conductor Gianandrea Noseda to contrast the music of Italy and Germany. Canadian violinist James Ehnes, who has recorded all three of Bruch's violin concertos, is the soloist in the composer's most enduring contribution to the repertoire, and Sarah Tynan appears in the concluding lullaby to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Luigi Dallapiccola's ambitious Partita, the work which established the composer's international reputation. Schumann's Fourth Symphony, continuing our complete cycle in the bicentenary of the composer's birth, constitutes one of the most exhilarating works in the Romantic repertoire. Finish time: approx. 21:35Conductor Gianandrea Noseda. Company BBC Philharmonic. Performer Sarah Tynan (soprano). Performer James Ehnes (violin).

BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra - T050587445

One of the most prolific, influential and instantly identifiable composers of our age, Philip Glass made an impact on the course of 20th-century music with his pioneering 'Minimalist' scores, going on to write major film scores - from Koyaanisqatsi and Kundun to The Truman Show and The Hours - and innumerable dance, theatre and operatic works. In the first Prom ever devoted exclusively to Philip Glass's music, his first major orchestral score, the 1987 Violin Concerto, is played by Gidon Kremer, who made the premiere recording, and conducted by Dennis Russell Davies, a long-term champion of Glass's music. Premiered in 2004, the 'Toltec Symphony' takes its title from the ancient pre-Columbian culture that reigned in Mesoamerica long before the coming of the Europeans, though vestiges of it still survive among the indigenous peoples of Mexico today.
