Information for Translations at Olivier (National Theatre), West End (Play). Set in nineteenth-century Ireland, the story focuses on the arrival of British Soldiers to a small Gaelic Community. Their mission is to perform an ordinance survey but the language barrier leads them to problems. Gaelic place names get replaced with English ones causing conflict and misunderstanding with the local people. Although humour and pathos are used throughout the play, it still seriously tackles a universal problem that is affecting the human condition.
Approximate runtime 150minutes (including any interval).
Performers Ciaran Hinds (Hugh), Seamus O'Hara.
Author Brian Friel. Producer National Theatre. Director Ian Rickson. Design Rae Smith. Lighting Neil Austin. Music Stephen Warbeck. Sound Ian Dickinson (for Autograph). Director Anna Morrissey (movement director).
