The famous story of Parisian courtesan, Marguerite Gautier, known as the Lady of the Camellias because of her fondness for that flower, was first given as a theatrical performance in Paris in the 1890s, starring the legendary Sarah Barnhardt. It was famously filmed by MGM in 1936 as ?Camille 'with Greta Garbo in the title role. The Verdi opera 'La Traviata' is based on the same story.
