Izindava - T1883939634Bawren Tavaziva's new work Izindava is dynamic, bold and explores human fragility within our changing world. Beautiful yet haunting and provocative, Izindava unearths raw emotions that are unsettling and unforgettable. Growing up amongst persecution, mob-justice and segregation, Bawren's memories of freedom instilled a strength of spirit and resistance that has shaped this work. Bawren's unbridled and intricate movement synthesises ballet, contemporary and African dance styles and is performed by a cast of stunning dancers with a film-scape of street life in Harare. Izindava translates as 'news' in the Zimbabwean language Ndebele.Choreographer Bawren Tavaziva.

Africarmen - T0747760845Bawren Tavaziva's most ambitious work to date is a sumptuous portrayal of the Carmen story and its continuing resonance today. Performed to music composed and arranged by Fayyaz Virji of the acclaimed Warriors International, Africarmen plays out the entanglement of desire, deceit and corruption in oil-laden Equatorial Guinea. Loosely based on Georges Bizet's popular opera, lingering ancestral voices are at work here amongst the dreams of a better life. Bawren Tavaziva's synthesis of ballet, contemporary and African dance makes for a powerful choreographic language that speaks loud, without talking.

Heart of Darkness - Kenyan Athlete/Sinful Intimacies/My Friend Robert - T02136165757Tavaziva Dance’s new production features three short works in different moods; the high energy, fast-paced Kenyan Athlete; Sinful Intimacies - a sensual duet exploring African unease with same-sex love, and the company’s major new work My Friend Robert. Kenyan Athlete takes its starting point from the expression "the sun is beautiful people". It is set to a fast-paced soundtrack, exploring the beauty and physicality of Kenyan people and their surroundings. Sinful Intimacies, a sensual new duet, will be danced at different performances by either two men or two women, exploring the unease of African society with same-sex love, which is usually perceived as a dark possession of dangerously subversive bewitchment. My Friend Robert is a provocative, highly emotive production, drawing upon Bawren’s personal experiences and memories of growing up in the newly-independent Zimbabwe. It examines how Robert Mugabe’s visionary dreams, empowerment, redistribution of resources and flag-waving on his rise to power in 1980 led instead to megalomania, economic meltdown, corruption and violence.
