milonga (M!longo) - T461837857

Deeply rooted in Argentinean culture, tango has fascinated and captivated the world with its sexuality, power and beauty. Cherkaoui's m?longa debuted in 2013, and is the first international large-scale tango production to be directed by a non-Argentine artist. After its highly successful UK premiere at Sadler's Wells, m?longa is now touring across the globe, to great critical acclaim offering audiences the chance to explore the traditional tango dance from another cultural perspective. Internationally renowned for his ground-breaking and critically revered award-winning productions such as Sutra and Babel(words), Cherkaoui takes the idea of a milonga as his starting point - those social dance-evenings held in intimate late night bars in Buenos Aires - and draws on traditional influences, adding a contemporary twist. Having collaborated with an incredibly talented cast of Argentinean dancers and live musicians, Cherkaoui has created "a very beautiful show indeed" (Daily Telegraph), bringing his own unique style to tango. Running time: 1hr 35mins (no interval)

Yabin Studio/Eastman - Genesis - T1971148614

UK Premiere. Sadler's Wells Associate Artist Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's acclaimed company Eastman present Genesis - a show about the origins of things, commissioned by Yabin Studio. Created by Cherkaoui and Chinese dance artist Yabin Wang, known for her incredible dancing in the Echo Games sequence of the feature film House of Flying Daggers, Genesis is about life and death and the constant testing and estrangement from nature that happens in between. Set to live music with roots in Africa, India, Japan, China and Poland, Genesis translates philosophical ideas about life, the pressures imposed on us by our society to perform and conform, into beautiful sequences of movement in which east and west, life and death, come together.

Apocrifu - T928859365

London Premiere. All the major ideologies and world religions, from Marx through Hitler to Mao, and from the Bible to the Koran, refer to (and swear by) a Holy Scripture. Belgian Choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui poses relativism, the equality of all cultures, the equal merit of the apocryphal, condemned writings, and so on, in counterpoint to these forms of 'absolute rightness' in Apocrifu. Set in Herman Sorgeloos' imposing wooden staircase to a desired heaven, books are unrespectfully scattered everywhere. Cherkaoui dances together with Yasuyuki Shuto, a classical dancer from the Ballet of Tokyo, and Dimitri Jourde, contemporary dancer and circus artist. The three dancers try to bring their distinct universes and opposing dance languages together. They are accompanied on stage by the Corsican vocal ensemble A Filetta.

TeZukA - T1255578808

Famed for his manga creations including Astro Boy and Buddha, Tezuka s work has become a vital part of Japanese cultural identity. Working with a cast of nine dancers, two musicians, an actor and a calligrapher, all drawn from Europe and Asia, Cherkaoui explores Tezuka s fascinating world - a blend of tradition, science fiction and contemporary reality. TeZukA will feature a specially commissioned score from award-winning composer Nitin Sawhney with lighting and visual design by Willy Cessa, plus projections of Tezuka s original illustrations alongside work by video artist Taki Ueda. Using the dancers movements to trace the physical evolution of Tezuka s drawings - from a line on a blank page to a single Japanese kanji (letter) to a fully-formed manga character - Cherkaoui will bring the God of Manga s philosophy, drawings and characters to life.Lighting Willy Cessa. Myth - T354302568

After his hit collaboration with Akram Khan, zero degrees, Sidi Larbi now presents a work for a large ensemble of twenty one performers and musicians. Known for blurring the division between dance and other forms of performance, and for mixing genres in interesting ways, here Sidi Larbi takes inspiration from both Japanese Manga and ancient Italian music. The characters in Myth play out a series of scenarios in an intricate set reminiscent of a heavenly waiting room. They emerge from nooks and crannies, to explore issues such as alienation, faith and the darker side of their alter egos - leaving the audience to wonder what fate lies in store for each of them.
