If This is Progress
T0
Performance party with live art, live music and DJs at the George Tavern, Stepney A pyramid explodes. Two women window shop without leaving their home. A breakfast of crisps, breast milk and human ova. Johannes Brahms plays the second movement of his own third piano sonata. A disco band covers Laurie Anderson. The moon shoots up. A buzzer rings. All is as it seems. And the world is ending. Again. If this is progress is a performance which begins at the point when things are seemingly wrapping up. A cast of eccentric and nominally unrelated characters play out their own, individual endgames against the backdrop of a world which they allow to end, offering a half sci-fi vision of a peaceful apocalypse that is equal parts parable, fantasy and afterthought. Presented by WAX // at the George Tavern in Stepney over three nights, If this is progress proposes a shift of expectations. Positioning the core performance (which is, for all intents and purposes, a proper stage play) as but the central action of a series of related actions, this mini-festival incorporates performance art, gallery performance, live music and DJs into three days of events.
