The Soul of Chi'en Nu Leaves Her Body

The Soul of Chi'en Nu Leaves Her BodyT342826236
Chi'en Nu is to marry Wang Wen-Chu. But first he must travel and complete his studies. Abandoned, the young woman is heartbroken and shattered with love sickness. Far from home Want Wen-Chu thinks he sees his love on the riverbank. Is he in the company of spirits? Or can a soul leave a mortal body in search of love? Written during the Yuan dynasty of 14th century China, this was one of the first plays to include dialogue and poetic songs in the vernacular, attracting non-aristocratic audience to the theatre for the first time.
