In fourth-century Alexandria, Thais is the scandalous courtesan of the temple of Venus. She is pursued by Athanael, a former admirer who has converted to Christianity and who vows to deliver her from a life of dishonour into the redemptive arms of the Church. Beliefs clash and each transforms the other's life forever.
