An Informer's Duty archive1930s Russia, Stalin at the height of his powers, the Soviet Union is being transformed overnight into an industrial superpower, millions are dying in the process, millions more are disappearing into secret graves, denounced for criticising the great leader. It is the middle of the night; a shy awkward man sits with a suitcase at the foot of his stairs so that when the police come for him they won't wake his wife and child. His name is Dimitri Shostakovich, he is quite possibly the greatest composer of the 20th century. His head is full of music that describes these great events. If he writes it down it will become his finest achievement, his 5th symphony, but it may also mean that he will never see his family again.
