Blood Red, Saffron Yellow archiveCornwall. April, 1942. Pearce's Bakery, Trevellan. Rationing is in force, but there are still hot cross buns, saffron cakes and Easter biscuits to be made. Kerenza Pearce mixes dough and Emily soaks the fruit. Little Lottie, an evacuee from Exeter, helps Mrs Pearce add mace and saffron...just a few grains - precious as gold! Old Mr Pearce stares down contemptuously from his frame upon the wall, while Kerenza's husband pat, hiding in the attic, makes not a sound. This atmospheric and turbulent rural war-time tells of hope and abandonment, love, lust and despair, blood and saffron cake. Contains strong language and brief nudity.
