Dear Scheherazade archiveVicar's wife, mother, social reformer and 'the female Charles Dickens' - Elizabeth Gaskell was an important figure in 19th century literature. Her story is enacted by popular actress Gabrielle Drake in Dear Sscheherazade which draws from Mrs Gaskell's novels, short stories and letters. Cranford, Mary Barton and North and South were noted for their political and social comment in a time of great change, and evoke an age of wealth and suffering that we may now find hard to understand.
