Details

Britain's grand old man of theatre, will be reading five of his celebrated one woman plays at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton,Leeds. The readings, by one of the key figures in world theatre, will take place over two evenings. On Saturday April 4, Wesker will read THE MISTRESS and LETTER TO A DAUGHTER and on Sunday April 5, ANNIE WOBBLER, YARDSALE and WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BETTY LEMON. There will be a question and answer session with the writer after the Sunday evening performance. Written over a period of eight years, between 1982 and 1990, Wesker's one woman plays have been performed around the world, but Sir Arnold has rarely given his own 'marathon' reading, and then usually in capital cities. This is a unique opportunity for theatre-goers in Leeds and Yorkshire and elsewhere to experience a truly inimitable performance, and to meet and question one of the world's most celebrated living playwrights. Sir Arnold has written and seen produced fifty plays, a novel, numerous short stories and essays, much journalism, a collection of poetry and, in his late seventies, an opera (which he directed in Tokyo in 2008). He has directed his plays in London, Edinburgh and many foreign capitals. His knighthood was granted for services to drama, and he has three honorary doctorates of Literature from the UK and USA. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
