In an uncertain, dystopian future where brutality, extortion and physical might regularly triumph over reason, compassion and any sense of justice, the Warlords, Thanes and self-appointed Kings of long fallen nations battle for control. Alliances are hard-won; forged with distrust and more likely to break than bend. One of the few territories to find stability and something like civil law and order is the district which has come to be known as Scotland. When whispers that Duncan, the Thane-appointed King of Scotland, plans to announce his eldest son, Malcolm, as his heir apparent - in direct opposition to council law and tradition - the worst civil war in centuries threatens to engulf all of Scotland and beyond as the Thane of Cawdor joins forces with a fearsome group of mercenaries called the Norsemen. Fortunately for Duncan, the rebels are swiftly put down; due largely to the tactical efforts of brothers-in-arms Macbeth and Banquo. But, when night falls and all is not quite as it seems, something ancient and evil threatens the souls of mankind once more. As King Duncan travels towards Macbeth's ancestral home, Sil? Macbeth becomes increasingly agitated (and not solely due to the letter she has received from her husband regarding a strange encounter on the road). She and Duncan have an uncomfortable and secret personal history that she will not allow to be relived or revisited. Devoted to her husband and burdened with past knowledge and grief, she prepares to welcome the King of Scotland into her home... for the last time.Presented byChalice Media Ltd.

This is not a story for the faint-hearted. It's the story of how old King Duncan died. It's a story of murder and betrayal. It's a story of supernatural sorcery. And it's a story that's going to be retold as you've never seen it before... Taking their cues from film noir, gangland Britain and the clowning tradition (yes, really) the critically-acclaimed Pantaloons Theatre Company put their own contemporary spin on Shakespeare's most dangerous play. Tragic and hilarious in equal measures this innovative take on 'The Scottish Play' (Macbeth) features femmes fatale, high-speed chases, killer lines, killer crimes and some seriously weird sisters.Company Pantaloons Theatre Company.

This is a version of Macbeth told through an intricately crafted blend of text, movement and polyphonic song. Presented by an international ensemble of eight exceptional performers, the production explores the musicality and muscularity of Shakespeare’s poetry and the colours and sounds of his extraordinary language. The story and characters are vividly portrayed, but in realising the drama through a uniquely imaginative physical and vocal phrasing, the tragedy is understood anew. Song of the Goat Theatre was founded in 1996 by Grzegorz Bral and Anna Zubrzycki and was seen in bite05 with Chronicles - A Lamentation which won a Fringe First and Herald Angel at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Prologue - T0752419684

Created in 2004, in the immediate aftermath of the Orange Revolution in the Ukraine, this production explores corruption and the seizing of power by foul means. Live Ukrainian music by the extraordinary DakhaBrakha Ethno-Cjaps Band accompanies a mesmerising performance. The essence of the Macbeth story is presented in ritualised form by actors wearing an eclectic mix of traditional clothing and masks. Sensual and exotic, the production unfolds against a kaleidoscopic backdrop of richly coloured carpets.Producer BITE07. Producer Dakh Centre (for Contemporary Arts). Director Vladislav Troitsky. Following hot on the heels of its modern interpretation of Romeo & Juliet, The Long Overdue Theatre Company has turned to the dark side with this dramatic and vicious production of Macbeth. With 38 characters, seven actors, Oriental dragon dancing, Balinese masks, blood, battles and black-magic TLOTC is pushing to the limit its trademark high energy performance style. Macbeth's original rock underscore and state of the art lighting design has been updated to give the production a cinematic quality that powerfully rams home the horror of Shakespeare's classic tale of lust and violence.Company Long Overdue Theatre Company.

In his shortest, most popular tragedy, Shakespeare evokes a country torn apart by civil war, traumatised by complete breakdown of law and order. And power is up for grabs. Into this chaos steps Macbeth, a military hero, spurred on by his ambitious wife - and a dangerous fascination with witchcraft. Each new morn new widows howl, new orphans cry? Stands Scotland where it did? Transforming unexpected spaces, Out of Joint’s 10th Anniversary production looks at an unstable state, ‘where to do harm is often laudable,’ and where brutality envelops young and old.Company Out of Joint. 3hird Wheel present a unique adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tale of treason, black magic and betrayal. See what happens when an everyday tragic hero decides to pack it all in to do some really, really bad things. Fuelled with dark humour, this performance takes the basic elements of Shakespeare’s text and marries it with a frenetic physical style as three actors take on the entire cast of characters. Macbeth was a really great guy until he decided to kill the King. So what could have possibly driven such a decent man to murder? Can it really just have been his ambition? Is it anything to do with the witches who are hiding in the dustbin? Ideal for those who enjoy a contemporary twist on traditional text and a perfect opportunity for those studying Macbeth at school to see it delivered in a memorable, accessible and interesting fashion.Company 3hird Wheel Theatre Company.

Antic Mind's productions of Macbeth makes [Shakespeare]'s tragedy accessible to the contemporary audience. Set during World War II it gives the play's themes of ambition and the battle between good and evil a modern perspective and thus greater relevance for today's theatregoer. This interpretation discards the usual stereotypes associated with the play: the witches are the embodiment of 20th century evil, the thanes are seen as genuine war lords and Macbeth reeks havoc with Stalinesque despotism. Suitable for any Shakespeare lover, this production has taken into consideration the needs of Key Stage 3 students studying the play for SATs exams in May 2002.Company Antic Mind.

Ancient Scotland. The forces of evil permeate society. Unbeknown to her husband, Lady Macbeth sells her soul. Three shadowy figures prophesy to Macbeth that he will be King. He is persuaded to murder. Once embarked upon, the path to unassailable power is a downward spiral of bloody destruction. Damnation looms. Yet Macbeth, putting his faith in the words of prophesy, clings to his belief that he is invulnerable. As the forces of good rally to depose the tyrant, the forces of evil, ever watchful, prepare themselves too. Good triumphs in the end. Doesn't it?Company Rattlestick Productions. Director Nick Fogg.
