Elgar's 'Enigma' Variations - T429192876

'The Enigma I will not explain - its "dark saying" must be left unguessed...' So wrote Edward Elgar of his career-making 'Enigma' Variations. What's not in question, however, is the tender playfulness of orchestral variations inspired by the composer's friends and family, including the noble, much-loved 'Nimrod'. Pianist Jan Lisiecki joins Elim Chan and the BBC Symphony Orchestra for Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 - a Romantic tussle between conflict and lyricism. The concert opens with the European premiere of Noriko Koide's silkworm-inspired Swaddling Silk and Gossamer Rain, commissioned for last year's BBC Proms Japan.Performer Jan Lisiecki (piano). Conductor Elim Chan. Company BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Kazuki Yamada Conducts The CBSO - T01999315472

The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra makes its first Proms appearance under Chief Conductor Designate Kazuki Yamada with one of the great Romantic symphonies. Charged with nostalgic yearning, swelling through the gorgeous slow movement and bursting out in an ecstatic finale, Rachmaninov's Symphony No. 2 finds echo in the late-Romantic warmth and full-bodied lyricism of Ethel Smyth's Concerto for Violin and Horn, dedicated to Proms founder-conductor Henry Wood. Two rising stars - violinist Elena Urioste and horn player Ben Goldscheider - are the soloists in a virtuosic work whose composer is finally reclaiming her place as one of the leading British voices of her generation. The concert opens with the vivacious overture from Glinka's Pushkin-inspired opera Ruslan and Lyudmila.Performer Elena Urioste (violin). Performer Ben Goldscheider (horn). Company City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Kazuki Yamada.

Sibelius, Schubert & Zimmermann - T1282560187

Sibelius's genre-bending Seventh unfolds in a continuous musical gesture of expansive, if characteristically enigmatic, nobility. Centenary composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann's Symphony in One Movement is another assault on tradition that kicks against Wagner's rousing overture to The Mastersingers of Nuremberg. Four popular Schubert songs and his technically formidable 'Wanderer' Fantasy get a colourful orchestral upscalingPerformer Elizabeth Watts (soprano). Performer Louis Lortie (piano). Prokofiev - The Piano Concertos - T595424108

All five Prokofiev piano concertos in one concert - it's a feat conductor Valery Gergiev achieved in 2012 at the Mariinsky and now brings to the Proms, along with three of his original pianists. It's a rare opportunity to hear three international soloists back-to-back, to compare styles and approaches, as well as to explore the composer's later, lesser-known concertos with their newly expressive tenderness. Daniil Trifonov, the prodigious young winner of the Tchaikovsky and Chopin competitions, shares the bill with his teacher Sergei Babayan, while Alexei Volodin tackles the rarely heard Fourth, commissioned, like Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, by the one-armed pianist Paul Wittgenstein. Finish time approx 22:20Performer Daniil Trifonov (piano). Performer Sergei Babayan (piano). Performer Alexei Volodin (piano). Company London Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Valery Gergiev.

Durufle, Ravel and Simon Holt - T1942372939

Ravel's La valse turns the Viennese waltz into a darkly tinged rhapsody, while his Valses nobles et sentimentales reflects the iconic dance in softer tones. Durufle's Requiem is the musical cousin of Faure's more familiar Requiem and anchors its 20th-century harmonies in the same arching plainchant melodies of the past. Flute virtuoso Emmanuel Pahud joins the orchestra for the world premiere of Simon Holt's flute concerto Morpheus Wakes - written for Pahud himself, who represents the god of dreaming 'as if slowly waking from adeep, troubled sleep'. Finish time approx. 21:45Performer Emmanuel Pahud (flute). Performer Gerald Finley (baritone). Performer Ruby Hughes (soprano). Company BBC National Chorus of Wales. Company National Youth Choir of Wales. Company BBC National Orchestra of Wales. Conductor Thierry Fischer.

Kronos Quartet - T536679805

For almost 40 years, the Kronos Quartet has been reinventing the string quartet, regularly turning it into a multimedia experience. The group's first Proms appearances begins with high-octance Syrian folk-pop and ends with a Kronos commission blending classical strings with ethnic Balkan instruments, shouts, foot-stomping, bells and electronic overdubs. In between, varied fare from the group's eclectic repertoire plus a BBC commission inspired by the work of Delia Derbyshire of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop (responsible for the realisation of Ron Grainer's Doctor Who theme). Listen out, too, for the otherworldly Kronos arrangement of a Scandinavian folk lament. There will be no interval. Finish time: 23:15
