The Sound of an Orchestra - T1506190147

What happens - on stage, in the air, in the listener's mind - when an orchestra plays together? In a tribute to Leonard Bernstein's televised presentations, which brought classical music to generations of new audiences, we pay homage to his pioneering work in this area. The first half of our journey into 'The Sound of an Orchestra' presents a vivid tapestry of words, projections and music, leading us from the primal anarchy of tuning-up to the dynamic complexity of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. In the second half we explore a kaleidoscope of works spanning almost 250 years - from the unsettling echo chamber of Ligeti's Apparitions, through Bernstein in Broadway mode, to Debussy's shimmering seascape La mer and Beethoven's resolute Egmont overture. A scintillating multi-sensory journey for novices and experts alike. There will be on interval.Company Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Conductor Joshua Weilerstein. Director Gerard McBurney. Sibelius - Kullervo - T1665891920

Finnish conductor Sakari Oramo pairs two of Sibelius's most engagingly descriptive works as we continue our 150th-anniversary celebrations of the composer. The folk hero Kullervo was the inspiration behind a powerful national statement for a country struggling to overthrow Russian rule. This massive musical hybrid ? - part cantata, part symphony, part suite - is a vivid work, richly melodic but looking ahead to modernism in some striking musical gestures. En saga is a fairy tale without a plot, whose contrasting movements suggest many possible stories, but never commit to just one. Finish time approx. 21:40Performer Johanna Rusanen-Kartano (soprano). Performer Waltteri Torikka (baritone). Company Polytech Choir. Company BBC Symphony Chorus (men's voices). Company BBC Symphony Orchestra. Conductor Sakari Oramo.

Mendelssohn - Elijah - T898674482

Mendelssohn's ever-popular Old Testament oratorio remains ripe for reassessment. We can be sure that Paul McCreesh will have re examined the work in what will be the culmination of a large-scale project like the one that led up to his revelatory 2009 Proms performance of Haydn's The Creation. Out go certain old-fashioned conventions; in come period instruments, a raft of enthusiastic choirs and a sensational line-up of soloists. There will be one interval. Finish time: approx. 21:50. Czech Philharmonic Orchestra - T2072742060

Famed over decades, the Czech Philharmonic returns to the Proms with a three-part celebration of music closely associated with it, including Dvorak's radiant Eighth Symphony, Martinu's equally colourful and spontaneous final symphony and a luminous musical legend by Janacek. Joining Sir John Eliot Gardiner, who makes the third of his four Proms appearances (see also Proms Saturday Matinees 1 & 2 and Prom 75), Lars Vogt offers a contrasting impression of musical nationalism in Grieg's intensely Norwegian and everfresh concerto - before returning to play more Janacek tomorrow lunchtime. Netherlands Wind Ensemble - T2136129556

The Netherlands Wind Ensemble, 50 this year, marks the 70th birthday of radical Dutch Minimalist Louis Andriessen and the 50th of his leading British pupil Steve Martland with performances of Andriessen's classic polemic De staat and Martland's jazz-rock 'dance fantasia' Beat the Retreat, commissioned by the BBC for its 1995 Purcell tercentenary celebrations. Another former pupil of Andriessen, Cornelis de Bondt creates an idiosyncratic death ritual in Doors Closed out of a fusion between the funeral march from Beethoven's 'Eroica' and Dido's Lament from Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. Two of tonight's works call for two or more pianos, in a nod to our Multiple Pianos celebration. There will be no interval.Company Netherlands Wind Ensemble. Conductor Lucas Vis.
