The Forsythe Programme - T0801513917

A world premiere and two classics from the master choreographer, William Forsythe. In 2022, Playlist (EP) brought the house down. Combining ballet classicism and athleticism with the music of Barry White, Natalie Cole and more, it left audiences "tipsy with delight" (Financial Times). It's back in 2025 to bring pure happiness into our lives! Our dancers will also perform New Suite, an arrangement of eight early Forsythe pas de deux. Set to Händel, Berio and Bach, these memorable vignettes showcase his signature style - rooted in the classical tradition yet layered with unconventional juxtapositions of ballet's kinetic logic. Completing this special programme will be your chance to experience a World Premiere, where Forsythe takes inspiration from the 2nd movement of Prokofiev's piano concerto number 3 in C major Opus 26; "Tema con Variazioni"

Carmen - T193809065

With its fiery drama and iconic music, Carmen never ceases to thrill. In this reimagined version, choreographer Johan Inger takes audiences deep into the passions and dark undercurrents of the original story - imbuing the enduring tale with new resonance. Sensual and spirited, Carmen turns every head - including Don Jose's. But when she refuses to fall under his control, he plunges into an abyss of jealousy and rage, with tragic consequences. Inger's choreography combines contemporary and classical movement to powerful effect. Nine large movable mirrors frame the action – transporting us from a town square through to the troubled mind of Don Jose. Menace and foreboding loom over the stage, thanks to additional music by Marc Alvarez which complements Bizet and Shchedrin's classic score, performed live by ENB Philharmonic.Choreographer Johan Inger. Our Voices - Three works showcasing the vast possibilities of ballet - T0450785424

The programme opens with the dazzling exuberance of Theme and Variations, a virtuosic showstopper from George Balanchine. Featuring 13 couples dancing to Tchaikovsky, this is classical ballet that is grandiose, yet light on its feet. Intricate choreography, technical bravura and exquisite musicality all lead to a triumphant finale that will leave you exhilarated. Known for her visceral and imaginative movement style, Andrea Miller creates a new work to Stravinsky's revolutionary score, Les Noces. The piece unfolds against set designs from acclaimed artist Dame Phyllida Barlow, with dancers joined on stage by the Opera Holland Park Chorus. Marking 100 years since the work's premiere, Miller's Les Noces examines the power of rituals and imagines the aftermath of Stravinsky's other iconic piece, The Rite of Spring. What comes after the sacrifice? Finally, British choreographer David Dawson takes us on a deeply moving journey with Four Last Songs. Richard Strauss's song cycle is a musical masterpiece, often described as a poignant farewell to life. Underneath a glimpse of the heavens above, twelve dancers unite in Dawson's poetic style to the music's lush, lyrical melodies, ushering in a feeling of serenity, eternity and the sublime.Choreographer George Balanchine (Theme and Variations). The Forsythe Evening - T0465570837

In 2018, choreographer William Forsythe and our dancers gave audiences a high when we premiered Playlist (Track 1, 2). Juxtaposing ballet classicism and athleticism with the beats of neo-soul and house music, it left the crowd whooping and wanting to join in. In 2021, it returns - now expanded into Playlist (EP), with six music tracks ranging from Khalid and Barry White to Lion Babe, and up to 30 dancers on stage. This dance party just got bigger. Rounding out the triple bill are two stunning works. Blake Works I is a soulful piece for 21 dancers set to seven songs from James Blake's album The Colour in Anything. Solos, duets and intricate group formations reflect the poetic melodies and words of Blake's music. Approximate Sonata 2016 is a series of stripped down duets: their complex choreography surprises and seems to carve out the air around the dancers. Originally created in 1996, Forsythe reworked this piece for Paris Opera Ballet. We are proud to honour this master choreographer in a special programme celebrating his enduring love and curiosity for ballet.Choreographer William Forsythe (Blake Works 1). Raymonda - T01812406339

Love and courage in a time of war. England, 1854. Raymonda runs away from her comfortable life to become a nurse in the Crimean War. There, she becomes engaged to a soldier, John, but soon develops feelings for his friend Abdur, a leader of the Ottoman army. As turmoil grows around and inside her, who will she give her heart to? Taking inspiration from the ground-breaking spirit of Florence Nightingale and the women who supported the war effort in Crimea, Tamara Rojo, Artistic Director of English National Ballet, creates a new version of the classic story ballet, Raymonda. This adaptation keeps the best of the 19th-century original - its glorious and sensuous score by Alexander Glazunov and the classical choreography of ballet genius Marius Petipa - and updates it with a dramatic new story, introducing a heroine in command of her own destiny. The original Raymonda is very rarely performed in the UK, where no dance company performs it in its entirety. This new version marks Tamara Rojo's first foray into directing and choreographing, building on her illustrious career as dancer and artistic director.Company English National Ballet. Reunion: An Evening with English National Ballet - T0968089426

English National Ballet returns to Sadler's Wells to perform five world premieres. Laid in Earth by Sadler's Wells Associate Artist, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, expands his moving duet to four dancers. The piece is set to Purcell's famous aria from Dido and Aeneas - sung live by mezzo soprano Flora McIntosh. Sadler's Wells Associate Artist, Russell Maliphant creates ever shifting choreography and uses light as an integral partner in the creative process. Collaborating on this project with video artist Panagiotis Tomaras and with commissioned sound design by Dana Fouras, the result is mesmerising. Yuri Possokhov choreographs for a UK company for the first time. Senseless Kindness is based on Vasily Grossman's great novel, Life and Fate, about a Russian family caught in the Second World War, and set to Shostakovich's Piano Trio No1. In Take Five Blues, Stina Quagebeur responds to Bach's Vivace and Paul Desmond's jazz standard, Take Five, both performed live. The Klazz Brothers' latin and jazz-infused covers of Tchaikovsky, Strauss and Mozart set the tone for Arielle Smith's Jolly Folly. The piece is like your favourite dance number in an old movie musical: fast-paced, surprising and full of uncontainable energy.

Kenneth MacMillan: a National Celebration - Song of the Earth - T01820246088

Kenneth MacMillan first heard Gustav Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde in 1958. He immediately fell in love with Mahler's elegiac score and determined to set it for ballet. He created his Song of the Earth in 1965 for Stuttgart Ballet, on the invitation of his friend John Cranko. The ballet was instantly acclaimed and The Royal Ballet took the piece into its repertory only six months after the Stuttgart premiere. MacMillan introduced a narrative thread to the piece's six movements, drawing on imagery from Hans Bethge's translation of the six Tang dynasty-era poems used by Mahler. Marcia Hayd?e created the role of the woman, a figure of loneliness isolated from the movements of the corps de ballet around her. In MacMillan's hands Death becomes a gentle, ever-present companion. Earthbound, non-classical movements morph seamlessly into modernist curves in a work of breathtaking beauty and power.Choreographer Kenneth MacMillan. Music Gustav Mahler. Design Nicholas Georgiadis. The Rite of Spring/In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated/Adagio Hammerklavier - T1749221524

The Rite of Spring - Pina Bausch's production features 13 male and 13 female dancers and a stage covered in soil. Dancing the selection and sacrifice of a terrified victim, it is as gut-wrenching and galvanising as Stravinsky's score, performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic. English National Ballet is honoured to be only the second Company in the world beyond Tanztheater Wuppertal, and the only UK Company to perform Bausch's masterpiece, not seen in the UK since 2008. In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated - With "this classic loaded with extreme moves and killer attitude" (The Times), William Forsythe started a completely new school of choreography, deconstructing classical ballet. Set against a bare stage it is danced by nine individuals culminating in a fierce display of technical and physical wizardry. Adagio Hammerklavier - As the first notes of Beethoven's pensive piano Sonata No 29, Op 106 play out, three couples slowly walk on stage. Modern Masters: Petite Mort/Spring and Fall/In the Middle Somewhat Elevated - T02147200301

Petite Mort - Created in 1991, Jir? Kyli?n's poetic piece, features six men, six women, and six fencing foils, symbolising energy, silence and sexuality. Performed to the slow movements of two Mozart Piano Concerti, the foils slowly become dancing partners, as the brutality of everyday life is revealed. Petite Mort is a quintessential Kyli?n masterwork, loved by our audience and our dancers when we performed it last year. Spring and Fall - In the same year that Petite Mort was premiered, Hamburg Ballet's John Neumeier, a new master of narrative and dramatic ballet, created Spring and Fall. Set to the Dvor?k's Serenade for Strings in E Major, it is a work for two couples and corps de ballet and takes its narrative from the tension in the music. Spring and Fall is not in the repertoire of any other UK company. In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated - With In the Middle, Somewhat Elevated, William Forsythe started a completely new school of choreography, deconstructing classical ballet and liberating a new generation of classical dancers to show off their abilities. Set against a bare stage it is danced by nine individuals culminating in a fierce display of technical and physical wizardry.Choreographer Jiri Kylian (Petite Mort). Music W.A. Mozart (Petite Mort). A Tribute to Rudolf Nureyev - T2054043482

75 years after Nureyev's birth and 20 since his death, English National Ballet celebrates the legacy of this uniquely gifted dancer from his traditional classical beginnings through to his inspirational innovation. Petrushka is a hopelessly romantic puppet trapped in a love triangle with the Ballerina and the Moor, choreographed by Fokine to Stravinsky's score. Nureyev danced Petrushka throughout his career and all around the world. Song of a Wayfarer by Maurice B?jart is one of the most beautiful ballets ever created for the male dancer, set to Mahler's first song cycle. This work marked Nureyev's move to the French contemporary repertoire in the early 1970s. Raymonda Act III was choreographed by Marius Petipa, creator of The Sleeping Beauty. The celebratory final act contains some of his finest work to Glazunov's magnificent score. Nureyev mounted this version in 1969, a memory of his formative years at the Mariinsky.

Beyond Ballets Russes - Programme 2: World Premiere of new Toer van Schayk work/Apollo/Suite en Blanc - T0712710354

English National Ballet celebrates the legacy of the Ballets Russes with performances inspired by some of the troupe's great works. Ballets Russes productions were collaborations with major choreographers, composers, artists and dancers of the time including Pavlova, Picasso, Debussy, Chanel, Matisse, Nijinsky and Stravinsky. The Chanel legacy lives on with Balanchine's Apollo where "The Muses' Lagerfeld tutus are beautiful, and a happy link with the fact that Gabrielle Chanel designed costumes for the Muses in 1928" (The Financial Times). This ballet by George Balanchine - himself a Ballets Russes dancer - is a neo-classical masterpiece which marked the young Balanchine's first collaboration with Stravinsky. Following hit performances by English National Ballet in 2001, Suite en Blanc returns to the London Coliseum. It is a glittering heritage ballet which was choreographed by one of Diaghilev's star dancers Serge Lifar - "as flamboyant and proud, and life-enhancing a confection as any made before or since" (The Independent on Sunday). Toer van Schayk creates a new work especially for this season in the spirit of the Ballets Russes.

A combination of fluidity and off-kilter shapes that push the furthest boundaries of dance, she utilises six dancers to represent the different dynamics and moods of Eliot’s relationship with his wife, Viv. Trapeze, a World Premiere by Barclays TMA Theatre Award-Winning choreographer [Christopher Hampson], uses [Prokofiev]’s rediscovered music for a ballet to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the composer's death. This vibrant and challenging score is the foundation for Hampson’s new dynamic work. [Wayne McGregor], Artistic Director of our resident company, [Random Dance], creates his first work for English National Ballet. This is the World Premiere of a duet that illustrates McGregor’s unique choreographic language and affirms his position as one of Britain’s most exciting young choreographers. The London Premiere of ex-English National Ballet dancer [Patrick Lewis]’ Manoeuvre is a visual feast which showcases the powerhouse of talent in the Company's male dancers. In a dazzling display of dance pyrotechnics the work explores the athleticism of classical ballet and circus acrobatics.Choreographer Cathy Marston (Facing Viv). Choreographer Christopher Hampson (Trapeze). Choreographer Wayne McGregor (2 Human). Choreographer Patrick Lewis (Manoeuvre).
