Details
Gob Squad is a group of UK and German artists, based in Nottingham and Berlin. Working collectively since 1994, the group makes and presents its work in urban sites such as offices, houses, shops, railway stations and hotels as well as in galleries and theatres. Using the language of film, TV and pop music to explore the complexities and absurdities of life today, Gob Squad's work is a search for beauty, meaning and humanity amongst the glittering facades and dark corners of contemporary culture. Sometimes improvised, sometimes strictly choreographed, the work is always provocative, entertaining and emotionally charged. Western Society is a portrait of civilisation in the 21st century, a frame through which the audience can peep into the living room of an unknown family, and recognize themselves. Exploring the internet's remote darkness and our fascination with technology, Gob Squad have brought back a tiny satellite, a fairly unspectacular unwatched video of an anonymous living room, of a family gathering somewhere at the edge of the western world. There's a party going on. A room full of people. Family, friends and strangers are all being held together by a karaoke machine: alone together and together alone. As the performers, dripping in bling, search for answers, test their knowledge, show their best sides and spill their stories, reconstructing and projecting themselves into this tiny piece of history over and over again, a few lucky audience members may win the chance to take part in the shiny golden image...
