Richard Alston Dance Company - To Dance and Skylark/Light Flooding into Darkened Rooms/Overdrive archiveContemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. Having recently celebrated 40 years of making dance, Richard Alston returns with an exquisite evening of classic and contemporary repertoire. Martin Lawrance's To Dance and Skylark (2009) is a celebration of Bach's colourful Brandenburg concertos, their rhythmic complexity and melodic vigour reflected in the company's high-spirited athletics -'clever, original, true choreography' (Financial Times). In contrast Alston's Light Flooding Into Darkened Rooms (2002) is delicate and tender, 'a lovely portrait of lovers' intimacy' (Daily Telegraph) accompanied by the works of Baroque lute master Denis Gaultier and contemporary pieces for mandolin. 'Fast paced and utterly exhilarating' (Sunday Times), Overdrive (2003) is a highly charged onslaught of sharply etched energy, catching the urgency of Terry Riley's Keyboard Studies and running with it to the wire.
