Contemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. Associate Choreographer Martin Lawrance has made Gambit, to an explosive percussive score by Julia Wolfe. Gambit sees all ten dancers cutting through the space with intense gusto. Alston's newest work Mazur is danced to Chopin's Mazurkas, music through which the composer expressed his longing for his lost homeland. Nomadic mixes Asian-influenced, traditional Romani singing with the toughness of an urban beat. Alston has collaborated with choreographer Ajani Johnson-Goffe to explore the interaction between gypsy music and urban sound.
