Contemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. Martin Lawrance's smouldering tango-based Brink opens the programme. Lawrance made Madcap for RADC in 2012, which was rapturously received by audiences and critics alike. Richard Alston made Holderlin Fragments to celebrate last year's centenary of Britten, its danced to Britten's calm setting of Friedrich Holderlin enigmatic lyrics. Also set to Britten, the quietly but deeply moving Lachrymae. The compassionate and tender music for viola and piano, played live onstage, spins emotional variations on a gentle song by John Dowland. Lastly, Illuminations, where Britten's masterpiece paints a vivid picture of the wild young genius Arthur Rimbaud. Britten and Alston combine music and dance to depict the turbulent life of the young poet, visionary and misfit in equal part.
