Richard Alston Dance Company - Even More/Roughcut/Lie of the Land archiveContemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. Alston’s brand new Even More is driven by the sharp contrasts of Prokofiev’s brilliant sixth Piano Sonata. Anger melts suddenly into a sweet lyricism. Both music and dance deal with the complexity of Prokofiev’s character, warm and quick-tempered by turn. The Sonata is played live onstage by Jason Ridgway. Alston’s contemporary classic Roughcut is danced to the cascading peals of Steve Reich’s shimmering New York and Electric Counterpoints for clarinet and guitar. Made in 1990, and a smash hit ever since, the piece is a joyful display of pure energy. The programme also includes Martin Lawrance’s tightly sprung Lie of the Land, danced to modern American composer Ned Rorem’s String Quartet No. 4.
