King Lear archiveKing Lear divides his Kingdom between his daughters according to a declaration of their love for him. His eldest Goneril and Regan exaggerate their affection and inherit. His youngest daughter Cordelia speaks only the truth and is banished. So begins the tragedy of King Lear, whose dignity, sanity and finally life are torn from him by a self-seeking younger generation, ambitious for his power. What is love, what is madness, what is truth - Shakespeare explores these questions together with many others in King Lear, widely considered to be his greatest tragedy. A cast of very well known actors have volunteered their time to perform in this exclusive event, a rehearsed reading of King Lear which is to be recorded live. The evening will celebrate the prestigious career of actor Freddie Jones and help launch the Access for All campaign for York Theatre Royal to install a lift into the De Grey Rooms, making workshop and rehearsal spaces accessible for all our community. Enjoy a glass of wine upon arrival, meet Damian Cruden, Artistic Director of York Theatre Royal, who will introduce the event. Meet the cast and team after the reading.
