Contemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. Associate Choreographer Martin Lawrance has made Gambit, to an explosive percussive score by Julia Wolfe. Gambit sees all ten dancers cutting through the space with intense gusto. Alston's newest work Mazur is danced to Chopin's Mazurkas, music through which the composer expressed his longing for his lost homeland. Brisk Singing celebrates the music of Jean Phillippe Rameau, genius of the French baroque. Alston has revived this uplifting dance for 8 dancers, carried along by the warmth and lightness of spirit in Rameau's music.
