Prom 30 - BBC Symphony Chorus archivePart of the BBC Proms. The BBC Symphony Chorus - one of Europe's leading large choirs - takes the spotlight in this afternoon Prom, under its Director of 21 years, Stephen Jackson. While Daniel-Lesur's The Song of Songs sets biblical eroticism in the sensuous French tradition, Stephen Montague in his new commission is inspired partly by the rhythmic play of linguistic utterance for its own sake. In two hushed, hypnotic brass pieces, Takemitsu, like his 'great mentor' Debussy, makes his visions unfold with dream-like spontaneity. By contrast, Poulenc's wartime cantata from occupied France - one of the great challenges of the choral repertoire - moves from despair to hope in a hymn to freedom. Finish time: approx. 17:30 no interval
