In Seymour Barab's Fortune's Favourites, a couple who were once lovers meet by chance in a restaurant. Both recently widowed, their lives are ruled by omens and superstitions. Might the waitress be instrumental in their fate? Jealous prima donnas feature in The Impresario by Mozart, and a demonstration of making a chocolate cake set to music seems unlikely, but Lee Hoiby's Bon Appetit is exactly that.
