The Colored Museum archiveThe Colored Museum has been delighting and discomforting audiences since it premiered at the Crossroads Theater in 1986, the same year Talawa Theatre Company was founded. Set in an imagined cultural museum, the 11 living exhibits explore African-American identity in an exhibition of larger than life stereotypes. Clearly of its era, its principal themes are specific and universal as it casts an unflinching eye on questions of identity and legacy. A one off talk will accompany performances of The Colored Museum to engage museum-goers and audiences in a wider conversation about two and a half decades of Black British identity; how do you decide which aspect of your experience and identity to preserve? Entitled Black Myth Versus History, speakers include documentary filmmaker and educator Doctor Robert Beckford and Playwright/author Bonnie Greer.
