Richard Alston Dance Company - Stronghold/Mazur/Brisk Singing archiveContemporary dance. Richard Alston, Artistic Director of The Place, the UK's leading centre for contemporary dance, is internationally recognised as one of the most influential and inspiring choreographers in British dance. Fresh from celebrating its 20th Anniversary, Richard Alston Dance Company leaps into its third decade with characteristic panache, and a programme of works bearing the Alston hallmarks of musicality and grace.Associate Choreographer Martin Lawrance, creator of Madcap and Burning, brings his latest work Stronghold. Made to an intense score by Julia Wolfe, Stronghold sees all ten dancers cutting through the space with gusto. Alston's newest work Mazur is a tribute to the music of Chopin, particularly his Mazurkas, in which he expressed his longing for his Polish homeland. Mazur received a 5 star review in the Financial Times on its premiere in London. Brisk Singing celebrates the music of Jean Phillippe Rameau, genius of the French baroque. Alston has revived this uplifting dance for 8 dancers, carried along by the warmth and lightness of spirit in Rameau's music.
