Cats archiveSong and dance based loosely on the T.S.Elliot poems Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. The plot is that all the cats are gathering for the Jellicle Ball at which one will be bestowed with an extra life. All the performers are cats in a outsize alley which takes over the whole auditorium. The show has a loose story but is essentially a series of pieces about the individual cats, their personalities and their lives. During the interval there is a chance for younger members of the audience to meet a cat and get an autograph. Time Out called it the dancing moggie show. Running time approx. 2hrs 30mins including interval Cats website.

User Review: 25Apr06: I'll be honest, I can't accurately review this production because the first half was so bad I walked out figuring I'd get better value for my £22.50 if I didn't spend the whole time having my life sapped away by the non-event that was happening on stage. The reason I walked out is simple. Nothing happens. Nothing at all. There is NO plot. In the first half a load of cats come on stage, dance around a bit, tell you what the Jelly Cats are like (and apparently they're fat, thin, tall, short, acive, lazy and any other contradiction you can think of). What little singing there is you can't really understand because the sound quality was pretty poor and when they're all singing together it makes it even harder to hear. Don't get me wrong though, there's not that much singing and there's no other dialogue. The last 15 minutes of the first half are merely filled with an over-long dance routine and then the only recognisable part of the production, when the old ugly cat sings Memories. This, in my opinion, was the best part of the production because I knew I'd be able to leave soon. I've read many other reviews and listened to people on my way out and the general consensus was that no-one can really understand what was going on but from talking to my friends who had the strength to go the distance with it, the second half is marginally more entertaining than the first. If you're looking for something entertaining with a storyline then...I don't know...you're probably better off watching the grass grow. This production has only survived because it is old now and people who were dragged to see it as children are now taking their kids (who understand it as much as their parents did). I will probably take my children to see this one day when I have some...but only to punish them when they're bad. The only person I'd recommend it to is someone who likes good costumes and lots of dancing. If I could give it less than 0 I would.
