The opulent surroundings of late 17th Century Rome were the backdrop for some of the most significant musical developments in the high Baroque. The city was also graced by the presence of Arcangelo Corelli, whose carefully honed music was to become the ideal model for generations of composers to follow. This concert features trio and solo sonatas from his Opp 1, 2 and 5 and cantatas by Alessandro Scarlatti, Ariana and Augelin, Vago e Canoro, in which the Newcastle-based period instrument orchestra, The Avison Ensemble, is joined by celebrated soprano and broadcaster, Catherine Bott.
