Dance Umbrella presents a programme of short films co-curated by Candoco's Pedro Machado as part of Candoco Turning 20. All of the films present distinct alternatives to the traditional notion of a dancer and as such expand the viewer's understanding of what dance can be. The films range from known classics such as Rosemary Butcher and Cathy Greenhalgh's Undercurrent (2001), in which a large naked woman moves beautifully underwater, to lesser-known gems such as Sally Potter's Play (1970), an intriguing depiction of children at play. Also featured are Jonathan Burrows and Adam Roberts' seminal piece Hands (1995), Gilian Lacey's Under/line (2001) with Diana Payne Meyers, and the original Candoco Dance Company ensemble in Victoria Marks and Margaret Williams' Outside In (1993). This is a creative and carefully executed collection of films, as varied and original as the performers in them.
