Venus and Adonis archive(1593). Written by a youthful Shakespeare at the time that London's theatres closed their doors in fear of the Plague. Venus and Adonis is an epic poem of wit and sensuous beauty. It tells the tale of the sex goddess, Venus and her passionate obsession for the petulant and beautiful Adonis. He rejects her offer of love, preferring the joys of boar hunting. However, after finally succumbing to her advances, the story ends in tragedy. From Cape Town, South Africa. The unique and much-loved Isango Ensemble from Cape Town kick proceedings off with a carnival interpretation of this great narrative poem. Isango have already enchanted audiences in the West End with their reimagining of The Mysteries - Yiimimangaliso and The Magic Flute - Impempe Yomlingo. They will bring the same modern African sensibility, brimming over with song and dance, to Shakespeare s great story of seduction and loss of innocence. Performed in IsiZulu, IsiXhosa, SeSotho, Setswana, Afrikaans, South African English
