Anthony Payne’s new string quartet commissioned for the Allegri String Quartet received enthusiastic reviews following its premiere in December. The concert opens with Beethoven’s G major Opus 18 quartet, a witty work reminiscent of Haydn’s high spirited quartets. By contrast, the third of the ‘Razumovsky’ quartets written in 1806 is more harmonically complex and challenging, but ends with a triumphant finale.
