Facade - William Walton Centenary Series archiveFa?ade was heard in its earliest version in 1923 with the poet of its extraordinary texts, Edith Sitwell, as the narrator. Short and highly contrasted numbers bring together off-beat musical style and verbal rhythm and imagery - the 'Popular Song' and 'Polka' have become particular well-known favourites. A grand opening night to the season brings Walton's widow Susana and well-known broadcaster Richard Baker to recite the ever-popular entertainment Facade with instrumentalists from the prestigious Purcell School in Bushey. Programme also includes Adam Gorb's Betjeman settings Hymns Uproarious and two new works.
