Grande Messe Des Morts archivePerformances of Berlioz 'Grande Messe des Morts' are few and far between, largely on account of the enormous forces involved. The orchestra alone features well over 100 players and in addition there are four brass bands. The giant Requiem Mass was originally commissioned by the French Minister of the Interior in 1837 to be performed as a Memorial Service for French soldiers who had fallen in Algiers.
